photo by @Joel Sartore | The kiwi is iconic to New Zealand, a flightless bird that is regarded as an honorary mammal. With whiskers, coarse shaggy fur-like feathers, and a blood temperature similar to humans, they really are strange. They are nocturnal, feasting on worms and other insects they pry out of the ground using their long bill with their nostrils right at the tip. They lay one of the largest eggs per body size ratio in the world – it can make up 20-25% of the female’s mass and laying it is roughly equivalent to a human giving birth to a 35 pound baby!  That’s roughly a 3-4 year old child. Unfortunately, the kiwi is under threat, primarily from introduced mammalian predators that were brought to New Zealand. Before humans arrived, the kiwi had no natural predators but now their numbers are getting decimated by the likes of rats, cats, dogs and stoats. The good news is that kiwi numbers are slowly recovering in areas where they are being protected from these pests. The @kiwibirdlifepark in Queenstown, New Zealand is part of the nationwide captive breeding program that breeds and releases kiwi into these protected areas.
