Photo by @andywcoleman // Orangutans get the headlines, but there are over 200 other mammals in #Borneo. The proboscis monkey, complete with its prominent nose, is one of the 44 endemic mammals on the island. We had great views of them along the Kinabatangan River, as they rarely stray far from the waterways. The male’s protruding nose can reach up to 7 inches long, and is thought to be used to attract females and to act as a resonating chamber to enhance vocalizations. Like their orangutan counterparts, numbers of proboscis monkeys in Borneo have fallen dramatically in the last 40 years primarily as a result of habitat loss. Here, we watch a female holding her blue faced infant while the rest of the group jumped around in the nearby brush. Taken while on a wilderness safari at Sukau Rainforest Lodge, one of the National Geographic Unique Lodges of the World. Stay tuned to @National Geographic Travel and @andywcoleman over the next few weeks for more images from this wilderness adventure.
