Lac, is a now rare and declining form of resinous material cultivated in this region of Myanmar.
Lac is produced when the branch of a tree is infested with an insect secretion known as broodlac, an initial form that then spreads viciously across the remaining structure. When infestation has occurred, the branches of the tree are eventually cut into what you see here. These cut up branches will then be treated further, either by processing into shellac, or by way of harvesting (for the scarlet red-purple pigment (basically mashed up insect remains)). Lac is an age old material that has had many uses throughout history, and is still sometimes found in newer products for coloring purposes: fabrics, cosmetics, even food and beverage products. It's most commonly exported from parts of India however small villages such as this still rely on it for its varied uses. #laikow #myanmar #contrateur
