Anne Umland, Curator of Painting and Sculpture: “In late 1920, Picasso was commissioned to create a monument for the tomb of his close friend, Guillaume Apollinaire. Apollinaire's premature death in 1918, at age thirty-eight, had devastated Picasso. The commission inspired him to throw himself back into sculpture in 1928 after a thirteen-year break. Incredibly, the memorial committee rejected all of his proposals—some were too sexy, others too cryptic—including this delicate diagrammatic wire construction. But Picasso, in typical fashion, wasn’t discouraged; instead, the continual rejection inspired him. This gallery and the adjacent one display many of the rejected proposals, some of the most astonishing sculptures of his entire career.” See our profile for more behind-the-scenes photos of the preparations for “Picasso Sculpture.” [Installation in progress for “Picasso Sculpture” exhibition at The Museum of Modern Art, New York.
