A horse is led on a trail through the Gallatin National Forest. One thing I love about the pine covered mountains of Montana is that all of the brilliant fall colors are on the forest floor instead of above in the trees. Today is day 21 of our backcountry horseback trip along the Yellowstone National Park boundary. This photo was taken on day 1 when the fall colors were ablaze. Now we wake to frost, the leaves are turning brown, and snow falls on us when our horses climb the 9 and 10,000 foot peaks.
