An early morning, near one of the palestinian positions, my eye was drawn to this dug out trench which reminded me of a dried out riverbed full of strange fish transformed into mortar shells. A violent explosion had just hit and panic reigned. Combatants were running in all directions. I waited for one of them to cross the “river” of shells. Today, cameras enable one to take fifteen images per second with an integrated autofocus. At the time, you had to focus manually and since there was no motor, you had to reload. Therefore, there was about a three-second delay between each image. It was a whole other way to train one’s gaze. It was crucial to anticipate in order to obtain a good photo. In these two images, I wanted to draw attention to the stark contrast of the machine of war against the fragility of human beings.
