Before I end with Myanmar I wanted to shed light on this place.
In 1998, Colonel Zaw Min found 59 people living and gathering supplies on Christie Island. General Than Shwe (the same general who held Myanmar under repressive rule until 2011) ordered Christie’s inhabitants to be murdered. Several days later, there was a fishing boat in the area where 22 people on board were shot and buried on the island.

Christie Island is located in the Mergui Archipelago, a formation of islands in the far south of Myanmar that borders Thailand. This area is infamous as part of the most restricted islands in the world because of government conflict (and now embargo). You’re not able to go anywhere close to this region (even with special permits) before you’re utterly declined. Christie Island is the Southern most part of this region, where the Myanmar landmass ends.

Fun Fact: in the 1965 Bond film - Thunderball, Ernst Stavro Biofeld (the original Dr. Evil) orders a ransom worth £100 million to be deposited in the Mergui Archipelago off the coast of Burma. This is what originally interested me in the islands along with the rarity of potentially diving in some of these regions.

I didn’t take this photo as I wasn’t able to gain access to this part of Myanmar, and its one of the only that I was able to find that exists. I wasn’t able to find the photographer, either. This region is supposed to explode within the next decade as restrictions are loosening and global tourism is soon expected.
