Photo by @jonathankingston A leafcutter ant carries a flower back to the colony, on Barro Colorado Island, near the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute, in Panama. The ants form an incredibly large and complex society that is divided into four casts of workers. The ants that bring the cut leaves back to the colony are generally able to lift 50 times their own bodyweight! Leafcutter ants cultivate fungus in their colonies, much like humans farm crops as a food source. I love this image because every time I look at it, in my mind I hear the ant saying “Honey, I’m home! I brought you flowers.”
