To find a prince, you have to kiss a lot of toads. Or in this case, a lot of penguins. Once found, most penguins mate year after year with the same partner. Mates are chosen by the symbolic giving of a pebble. Male penguins search for the perfect pebble on the beach...one that can be the foundation of a new and beautiful nest. It had to be just the right size and shape...no inferior pebble will do! If the female accepts the pebble then she has accepted the male as her mate, and they will somehow find each other year after year in the colonies of hundreds of thousands of birds. However, if for some reason one of them does not show up to the colony, the show must go on and the female is free to accept a new pebble from a new suitor. But for now, these King penguins are very happy together. // photo by @jonathan_irish
