Women and children are chased through the narrow streets with tanks. According to the Zoroastrian tradition, purifying fires are lit in the courtyards of homes, on village squares, at each crossing in the towns. In response to the Turkish law against celebrating Nowruz (Persian New Year), the Kurdish people burn tires to stop the advancing tanks and police armoured vehicles. The army photographs the demonstrators in order to find and arrest them later. I was hidden in the corner of a little alley to avoid being targeted by the military The young woman in the red skirt caught sight of me. She was frightened and, with a brusque gesture, covered her face. I was there as a witness, but she thought I was an Army photographer. It was a fortuitous encounter without a face, just a red skirt lighting up a sad grey landscape of violence. Recently Turkish government accepted newruz celebration ,a right that kurdish people obtained after years of struggle. I hope that all people in the world will have the right to celebrate their rituals related to their cultures.
