"Shooting a band’s portrait at a festival is always a challenging task. Let’s face it, when there is nothing but a few trailers and tents around, the photography options are kind of limiting. If you’re really lucky you might get a little piece of green. But after booking a portrait with Matt and Brad Shultz of #CagetheElephant at the Firefly Festival I knew I had to do better than that. I had to overcome the typical boring festival photo shoot and find a way to bring out their character—that same character and vibe the audience gets from them on stage. So even though I was in the middle of nowhere in the little town of Dover, Delaware, I woke up super early and drove to the closest Party City store. With the theme “Thank You, Happy Birthday” (the title of their second studio release) in mind, and with very little time on my hands to get all the props needed, this photo is the result of that crazy morning. I was going for an in-character portrait with a theme related to the band, and I think this pretty much nailed it. What do you think?"" As told to @Rolling Stone by photographer @DanaDistortion
