Bearing Witness ~ The Refugee Crisis Walking for four days, an elderly women clutches her crossed-shaped cane, the only possession she has left after fleeing fighting in her village, reaching a feeding center at an NGO in Nimule, Sudan. Even today, this portrait fills me with sadness and hope…someone who lost everything, still having the will to move on, no matter how daunting or impossible ~ Photographed in late 1993. This image is part of a multi-week series, #BearingWitnesstheRefugeeCrisis, delving deep into my archive of more than 20 years documenting forced migration based upon war, conflict, poverty and oppression around the world. The events we are witnessing throughout Europe and beyond have haunted humanity for centuries, most often caused by the weakness of humanity. Today we are seeing the largest mass migration since World War II, the desperate act of tens of thousands fleeing war and oppression. Throughout the coming weeks I will be putting a human face on this tragedy, illustrating the reality we bear witness today -- our brothers and sisters in the dire act of survival. NO, these are not terrorist. They are mothers, sons. Men, daughters. You and me, all on a journey for hope. Join me by sharing this story over the coming weeks as we visit eastern Turkey and its border with Syria, Haiti, Cuba, South Sudan, Bangladesh and yes, images soon from Izmir, Turkey, to the beaches of Lesvos, Greece, where I've just returned. A story that is about all of us.
