We made our way to Ranthambhore National Park in India with the goal of seeing tigers and this was our first of several sightings. We were able to stay with this female most of the morning as she patrolled her territory. It was a privilege to see her in the wild and to learn about what is being done to protect them and their habitat. Starting tomorrow, November 27, Nat Geo WILD will present a week dedicated to nature’s fiercest felines—big cats—creatures of magnificent strength, ferocity and beauty that are rapidly facing extinction. Populations of lions, tigers, cheetahs, leopards, jaguars, and other top felines are declining at an alarming rate. They are victims of habitat loss and degradation as well as conflicts with humans. More than a television event Big Cat Week is an extension of the Big Cats Initiative, a long-term commitment by the National Geographic Society to stop poaching, save habitat and sound the call that big steps are needed to save big cats around the world. This global initiative actively supports on-the-ground conservation projects and education to help stem and eventually reverse the rapid disappearance of big cat populations.
I will be posting Big Cat images and stories here and on my account at @andywcoleman all week. #bigcatweek #bigcats @natgeocreative
