#FranciscoOller painted the Aurora sugar plantation in Puerto Rico during the Spanish-American War. While at its peak the plantation grew to be one of the largest on the island, Oller’s depiction of the hacienda as a nearly abandoned site suggests otherwise. Two women of color walking outside the boundary of the hacienda are the only inhabitants in the desolate scene. They remind us that the sugar plantations functioned with the labor of enslaved persons until as late as 1873, when abolition was declared in Puerto Rico.
