Young southern fur #seals play in a mossy meadow near Stromness Bay, South Georgia Island, #Antarctica. These resilient marine #mammals are an unexpected survival success story after near-extermination since the 1800's. At the time, fashionable hats used seal pelts and sealers slaughtered them by the hundreds of thousands. Fortunately they are now protected and today southern fur seals are back by the millions, in places so thick with them that bays teem black and it is hard not to step on young ones ashore. They don't stay cute forever though... some breeding male fur seals can weigh almost 500 pounds and be aggressive even to humans! #wildlife #baby #animals
