On the pilgrimage up the steep hill to the Albanian-Christian church, a Grandmother helps her young granddaughter stick home-made beeswax candles to the side of the rocky mountain. This pilgrimage celebrates the patron saint of Georgia, Saint George, and is known as the Kurmukoba festival in Azerbaijan. Saint George is respected by Muslims and venerated by Christians so Azerbaijani Muslims and Christian-Georgians come together at the Caucasian Albanian church to celebrate Saint George’s slaying of the Dragon. Each participant buys ten candles, lighting them on their hike to the peak of the hill. Before entering the church, members must circle around it three times, kissing it and praying at each of the four corners. Prayers continue inside and the remaining candles are lit.
