Biggie once rapped that he was “untouchable.” Iva Chavez (@eevz) could apply a similar boast to her work. The Australian tattoo artist (the B.I.G. ink pictured here is her handiwork) is best known for her faithful re-creations
of faces, specifically emcees — Tupac, Eazy-E, LL Cool J, etc. She started drawing at a young age — around 7 or 8. “I didn’t trace it, I copied it from eye,” recalls Iva, about her Ninja Turtles and New Kids on the Block sketches. “And my mom was pretty blown away by how exact it looked.”
Now 32, Iva has been tattooing portraits full-time for the last three and a half years.
“You can’t make one mistake while doing a portrait,” she says. “Like one little line that’s a millimeter off or a little bit of shading that’s slightly too dark and you might ruin the whole [thing].”
