33-year-old Gisela Mota was assassinated in the beginning of January, only hours after being sworn in as the first female mayor of #Temixco, Mexico. In the last decade, hired killers known as sicarios have killed almost 100 mayors across Mexico. But Gisela had been undeterred. “Since Gisela was a child, she wanted to get into politics, to change things,” her mother, Juana Ocampo, told @ニューヨーク・タイムズ. But Gisela’s murder illuminates some worrying features of how the conflict in Mexico is changing. “The war is evolving far beyond the drug trade,” Ioan Grillo writes in this weekend’s #nytopinion section. “Cartels now fight for political power itself.” The photographer @adrianazehbrauskas photographed Gisela’s family and friends leaving a memorial service earlier this week. #nytweekender
