Gisela, 33, was sworn into office as the city’s first female mayor on New Year's Day. She was still in her pajamas the following day when the men approached her parents’ breezeblock house. In front of her terrified family, the men beat her and shot her several times, killing her. Gisela’s murder illuminates some worrying ways in which the conflict we know as the Mexican drug war is evolving beyond the drug trade. Cartels now fight for political power itself.
