Photo by @nickcobbing A scientist’s eye view of a pteropod in a marine laboratory. The shadow at the top of the frame is the edge of the microscope -the border of this glimpse into an otherwise secret world. Shell building creatures like this tiny sea butterfly are being studied by researchers because of the impact of ocean acidification. As our oceans absorb greater levels of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, the water become less alkaline, making it harder for calcifying creatures to build shells -put simply they dissolve. This will likely impact other species, because these tiny creatures are an important part of the food web in polar ecosystems.
