Photo by Kevin Schafer – @schaferpho, @natgeo In my journey to document all of the world’s penguin species, I have had the good fortune to visit some remarkable places : the far-flung islands of the sub-Antarctic, the desert coastlines of Argentina, and the ice-locked shores of the Weddell Sea. But perhaps the most unexpected place I encountered these singular birds was on the Cape Peninsula of South Africa. Here, virtually in the suburbs of Cape Town, among a stunning collection of granite boulders, is one of the most captivating of penguin places. This is the home of the African Penguin (aka the Black-footed or - more colorfully - the Jackass Penguin), the only species that breeds on or around that continent. To capture this perspective, I climbed up onto some of the granite pillars in the early morning, as the birds were leaving their burrows and heading out to sea. I found the location and composition first and then simply waited until the birds walked precisely where I had hoped they would, accompanied by their long shadows. The proximity to Cape Town makes seeing these wild penguins an irresistible treat. However, the location is not a fortunate one for the birds themselves, since this coastline is also home to vast amounts of marine shipping. Oil spills and overfishing have hammered the population of African Penguins in the past two decades, and the species was listed as Endangered as recently as 2010.
