The ‘Vrindavani Vastra’ (literally ‘the cloth of Vrindavan’) was produced in Assam in north-eastern India sometime in the late 17th century. It is made of woven silk and tell stories from the Hindu god Krishna’s life, during the time he lived in the forest of Vrindavan.
In this detail from the textile, you can see Krishna killing Bakasura the crane demon. The demon attacked Krishna, who then forced Bakasura’s beak so far open that blood poured from his head and he died. Though gruesome, these episodes showing Krishna defeating demons are all part of Krishna’s divine lila (play) in which he eternally subdues the forces of evil.
