What is it about “cleansing” that calls us so incessantly? The ocean is #cleansing. The first snow, a fresh rain, a fresh start. It’s as if we enter this world naked, #beautiful and perfect in our uniqueness and from the moment the umbilical cord is cut and we’re wrapped in swaddling clothes, life begins piling on layer after layer of information, telling us who we are: you’re a boy so you get a blue blanket. You’re a girl, so your name isn’t Bob. You’re wealthy and spoiled or poor and uneducated. You’re smart if you get straight A’s in school. You’re dumb if you don’t. You’re a good person if you #sacrifice yourself for others and worthy of praise if you’re a good athlete. You’re physically ideal if you have a six pack as a man and you’re overweight if you’re bigger than a size 4 as a women. With all of society, family, marketing, school telling us who we are, it’s no wonder we want to cleanse it away to find the authentic person buried beneath it all...
