I've gotten some well-meaning, legit comments lately regarding highballs, spotting, pads, and the like. Every concern is completely valid and I will be the first to say that what I do is not necessarily the safest. However, let me expand a bit on "managed risk" and how I make each climb as safe as possible... Because, in truth, I only progress when I feel comfortably safe.
I toprope highballs (such as Evilution) to make sure the no-fall zone moves are solid. Sometimes I ask for no spotting ? because a straight-down fall is better than both the climber and spotter getting hurt (also i.e. Evilution). And I only use one pad on very easy climbs where the chance of me falling is pretty low (such as this one, The Hunk V2 or my previous post). I understand holds break, feet slip, anything can happen. Perhaps I understand it more than you think. But that is why I put my proverbial 'seatbelt' on before getting into the car of any of these climbs.
