Photo by @amivitale. Ecstatic about the news from @nrt_kenya and Sera Community Rhino Sanctuary: a brand new BABY black rhino was just born on March 11! This is the FIRST black rhino born on community land in northern Kenya in more than 25 years! The new mother was part of the translocation from Lewa Wildlife Conservancy (@lewa_wildlife) in May 2015 that I was privileged to witness. This is huge news when you consider that populations of the Eastern black rhino plummeted by 98% between 1960 and 1995, primarily as a result of poaching and hunting. However, Kenya’s population has increased from 381 in 1987 to a current estimate of 640! The population numbers are projected to rise significantly in the near future, especially with growing partnerships between government, communities and conservation organizations.
