Happy Birthday, Fernando Hierro! The former Real Madrid captain turns 48 today. Hierro joined ‘Los Merengues’ in 1989 after two seasons with Valladolid and won the league in his first season there. Despite playing as central defender or defensive midfielder, he was a prolific goal scorer. With Real Madrid, he won five La Liga and three UEFA Champions League trophies over the course of nearly 15 years. Hierro was capped 89 times for Spain and scored 29 goals, travelling to four FIFA World Cups (1990, 1994, 1998, 2002) and two European Championships (1996, 2000).
