Photo by @stephenwilkes: With Cuban-American relations making true progress for the first time in over 80 years, I am taking a moment to look back at images from my trip to Havana just a few years ago.
Walking along the cracked and worn streets of the tiny island's largest city, I couldn't help but feel as if I'd traveled back in time.
Inside, most homes had an eclectic blend of found objects, tweaked to be made more practical in this, their second life.
This image was a part of a series I did called, "My Favorite Room". For this specific room, I noticed the house from down the road and knew that inside must've been something special. So I knocked on the door and asked the homeowner if I could photograph her favorite room. "You have to see this one, with my two favorite people", she said. I walked inside to find Kenny Rogers, and Che Guevara. How strange to find American culture contrasted so strongly with Cuba's tumultuous political history.
As we open the door to Cuba once again, I can only hope that our renewed relationship is the onset of an exchange of culture, goods, and travel with a people from whom we can learn so much.
