Photo by Jeff Gusky @hiddenwwi | At the beginning of WWI, opposing trenches, often separated by several hundred feet or less, were rapidly dug. They zig-zagged across the landscape of Northeastern France into Belgium where the trenches turned west to the Atlantic Ocean. Over four hundred miles in length, this was the Western Front. Though most of these trenches have long since disappeared, there are places like Sanctuary Wood in Belgium where 100 years ago seems like yesterday.

WWI tells us so much about ourselves and our vulnerabilities to the wonders of modern progress. But the way WWI is most often remembered is through old photographs and silent films that make it seem ancient and irrelevant to our lives. Most historians argue that WWI has a greater impact on our lives than WWII.

Surprisingly, there are countless places along the former Western Front, especially in France, which epitomize the famous saying by William Faulkner “The past is never dead. It's not even past.” To view more of my photographs of The Hidden World of WWI, please visit @hiddenwwi.
