Have you heard of tractorcade? In the late 1970s farmers and ranchers were economically hard hit. Frustrated and feeling abandoned by their government, farmers from around the country joined together to create a protest group, the American Agriculture Movement (AAM), to lobby for change.
Organized in the fall of 1977, AAM farmers participated in tractorcades (protests on tractors) and asked politicians to raise agricultural prices and governmental price supports. The group rallied around the concept of parity—that government should impose tariffs and offer subsidies to insure that average farm family income was the same as the average urban family income. This and many other protest pins were donated to the museum by AAM activist Clifford Hamilton.
