A @metopera chorus member waited in the wings before entering during a recent rehearsal. The Metropolitan #Opera is essentially an opera factory — one that is never busier than when building and staging a new production, as it did with “Roberto Devereux,” which opened last week. More than 3,000 faux pearls and 500 yards of fabric went into its 76 Elizabethan-style costumes, which were sewn in the Met’s costume shop on the second floor. To capture the work that goes into a staging that will be performed just 8 times this season — an expensive, labor-intensive undertaking that helps explain why the Met’s budget will be almost $300 million this year — @ニューヨーク・タイムズ staff photographer @jamesestrin spent time in windowless underground rehearsal rooms, attended a costume fitting and got a look at the orchestra’s well-dressed, long-running intermission poker game.
