Why is controlling weeds a global challenge?
Around 30,000 weed species worldwide are reducing the quality and volume of crop yields. Not only are they constantly competing with crops for nutrients, sunlight, space and water, the number of herbicide-resistant weeds is also growing fast. The alarming figures for 2014: 238 of the 1,000 worst and most commonly found weed species have developed resistance, in 84 crops and 66 countries. Moreover, no new modes of action that could potentially control them are expected to be available in the near future.
