#OnThisDay in 2006, Tony Meola returned to the U.S. national team to earn his 100th cap after a four-year break. The three-time FIFA World Cup veteran joined the national team in 1988. Meola played every minute of the USA’s matches in the 1990 and 1994 World Cups and served as one of three goalkeepers for their historic quarterfinal run in the 2002 World Cup. In 2006, manager Bruce Arena recalled Meola to the squad for a friendly against Jamaica that ended 1-1. It was his last national team appearance, but it made him the ninth player, and the first goalkeeper, to reach the 100-cap milestone for the U.S.
