Tegla Loroupe was born in the West Pokot, District of Kenya. One of twenty-four siblings, she spent her childhood working fields and looking after her younger brothers and sisters. At the age of seven, she began her schooling - which required a barefoot run of ten kilometers each morning. She began racing distances of 800 and 1500 meters; although she loved running, her father did not at the time support her love of the sport. Instead, he insisted she concentrate on more utilitarian tasks, such as looking after her siblings and the home. Loroupe remained persistent and kept racing, and even when the Kenyan Athletics Federation did not seem impressed with her (thinking she was too frail), she kept going and ultimately won a prestigious cross country race. In 1994, she traveled to New York City to run her first major marathon. Not only did she win the New York Marathon that year, but she also became the first African woman to ever take that prestigious title. Kenya finally had a female runner to rank alongside their talented male athletes.  During the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, she was poised to be the favorite to win the Gold - but on the eve of the race, she was suffering from food poisoning.  Despite her weakened state, she still ran and came in 13th place and followed that performance with a 5th place finish in a 10k race.  The motivation she felt to still compete while while ill was her sense of duty to the Kenyan people, who now looked up to her as a role model. Loroupe did not stop there; she has continued to break records (including her own). In 2003, she founded the Tegla Loroupe Peace Foundation.  She has been successful in bringing members of warring tribes together and in 2006, founded the 10k Peace Race which included 2,000 warriors from six different tribes.  In 2006 she was named a United Nations Ambassador of Sport and a member of the ‘Champions for Peace’ - a group of athletes seeking to use sport to bring about peace. Beyond a role model, she is an ambassador of hope and peace in this world and I, for one, think this woman is the embodiment of strength, focus and love. #womancrushwednesday
