Photo by Kevin Schafer – @schaferpho @natgeo – Look at your little finger nail: this little Golden Rocket Frog could easily sit on that fingernail...with room to spare. I mention this, because it explains, in part, why they are so devilishly hard to photograph. I recently spent most of a week in Guyana’s Kaieteur Falls National Park, simply trying to find them among the leaves of giant bromeliad plants, their only home on Earth. But finding them was not really the hardest part; it was getting a camera close enough to get a picture before they hopped away. I have hundreds of empty, frog-less captures, or images with just a pair of blurry legs streaking out the edge of the frame. (Clearly, a bright yellow frog knows it can’t rely on camouflage in leaves of brilliant green, so they are understandably a little…uh, jumpy.) For days, as soon as I poked my head over the edge of a likely leaf, any resident frog was instantly gone, retreating to the safety of the pools of water deep in the heart of the plant. After nearly a week, I had almost nothing to show for my effort. Then I met this cooperative fellow. From the moment we “met", instead of leaping to safety, he (or she) inexplicably hopped right towards me. Even when my camera lens was lens than an inch from its nose, the frog seemed completely untroubled, and happily posed in various angles. The truth is, I have no easy explanation of why this individual frog was so relaxed - but I will always be grateful.
