17-year-old Bernice Palmer used this camera to capture events on the night that the Titanic sank, April 14-15, 1912.
Palmer was a passenger on the liner Carpathia, which responded to the Titanic’s distress and rescued over 700 passengers. She captured images on this Kodak Brownie camera of the survivors as well as the iceberg that caused the ship to sink.
The Brownie was one of the first cameras made for quick, easy use by anyone; no professional skill was needed. Not knowing the true value of her Titanic photos, Palmer sold the publication rights for $10.
