Happy birthday to Elisabeth Louise Vigée Le Brun, one of the finest 18th-century French painters and among the most important of all women artist. “Vigée Le Brun: Woman Artist in Revolutionary France,” on view through May 15, is the first retrospective and only the second exhibition devoted to the artist in modern times.

In this self-portrait, both her subject and her elegant black silk gown were intended to evoke the power and prestige of her position as a painter to the king of France.
