Along with the melting of the snow, the Scandinavian mountains awake to
new life every April. Passerines return from their wintering areas and
the members of the grouse family that are all-year residents, begin
their odd courtship rituals. Capercaillie gather in familiar areas
every single year to mate. Since it is a characteristic species of
coniferous forests, it was an odd experience meeting this individual in
a birch forest, close to the treeline in the Norwegian mountains. We
were even more surprised when instead of escaping, he came closer to us
and sprang into attack. It was funny having this crazy male running
after us in the ski tracks—a closer and more memorable encounter with
wildlife you could only dream of!
Both capercaillie males and females can become fearless in the lekking
season which has been observed in 1% of the population. Diverging from
their normal behaviour, females appear in close proximity to human
settlements, while males become aggressive and attack anything and
anyone crossing their territory borders. The disturbance in the males'
behaviour is supposed to have a connection to abnormally high
testosterone levels in their blood.
