Photo: @rezaphotography // Dancing with faith // #Egypt // A crowd of pilgrims swarms into the huge esplanade that stretches in front of the mosque of the city of Tanta. They are arriving for Ragabiya, a three-day festival in honor of the most venerated saint in Egypt, Sidi Ahmad Al-Badawi. The worshippers celebrate his memory to the rhythm of tambourines and Sufi chants, music so hypnotic some of the pilgrims dance themselves into a trance. Despite the hardships of their daily lives, Egyptians know how to be joyful. Egypt has many such lively religious gatherings, called mulids, where people come together to celebrate the birthday of a saint. I stayed at the festival for all three days, remaining right at the heart of it: I was at the feet of the dancers, shooting from down on the ground, trying to capture the instant, the very moment of truth. Being patient, staying right in the thick of wars, celebrations, tears, screams, the core events of life, and becoming nothing but a visual resonance chamber — that is my role.
