Tumbula, Mexico

Tumbula is a Chol speaking Maya town in north-central Chiapas. The church was built in the 1600s by native labor. Often the Maya workers would hide their own gods inside the masonry of the chapel walls so that each time the Spanish priests required them to pray they were quietly subverting their own christian conversion. JL Steven's mentions this church and the town in his classic book, Incidents of Travel in Central America written in 1848.
