This is the only memento I have of the week I spent making a documentary with #Prince: the booklet they gave out at #paisleypark to accompany the listening party of "The Rainbow Children." One of Prince's most spiritually oriented projects, Rainbow Children was accompanied by a booklet beautifully stuffed with art and lyrics so everyone could follow along while listening to the "story album". When I told him one of the things I always liked about his records was that he included lyrics in the liner notes, Prince said "I don't want people singing the wrong words. Like..." And then he sang his punchline: "Excuuuuse me while I kiss this guy!" He even mimed a guitar as he did it. I sat there and watched one of the greatest artists who ever lived kinda momentarily cover Hendrix AND make a pretty well-known joke about misheard lyrics. It was legit funny so I laughed - which was good because he was already laughing at his joke. And for a second, he wasn't the Prince he always projected, he was the Prince you always suspected he was in real life. I'll never forget that: Prince making a corny joke even my Mom might've made, but elevating it with a near-perfect Hendrix impression and capping it with genuine laughter. One of life's little moments, made a little more vivid by being in #Minneapolis today. I'm thinking about going out to Paisley Park later to lay some flowers at the gate. I owe this legend that much. #KevinSmith #PurpleRain #Minnesota
