While working on Violet Isle with Alex, the most common creature I found in Cuban menageries was the bird - from roosters
and peacocks and woodpeckers to cockatiels and pigeons and parrots. I love the complex and resonant questions this raises: of all the creatures, why are birds the most popular animal in Cuban menageries? Does this hint at some kind of longing for flight in a country where few people are allowed to travel? Does this suggest something about Cubans and their relationship to the natural world of their “violet isle” - a little-known nickname for Cuba inspired by the color of its soil - this environmental “island in a bubble” that scientists now think may be one of the most protected in the region because of the dearth of plastics and other pollutants? Over the years, I’ve learned that the more questions a particular image evokes, the richer the metaphor will ultimately be. I also try to heed the advice of Paul Valéry: “One should be light like a bird, and not like a feather.” - RNW [Photo: RNW, Havana, 2008, from Violet Isle] #Leica #LeicaCamera #LeicaCulture #PhotoLondonFair16 #AlexWebb #RebeccaNorrisWebb #Selections #?? @webb_norriswebb
