Last week Rebecca, Tom Bollier - Aperture’s production manager - and I spent long hours on press in Verona, overseeing the printing of my new book, La Calle: Photographs from Mexico, which will be released late this summer from Aperture. There’s nothing like the experience of having a freshly printed unbound book in one’s hands. As I flip through the pages, as I smell the drying ink, some 30 years of wandering the streets of Mexico pass before my eyes, from my early black-and-white US-Mexico border work to my work in color. For as I photographed more in Mexico, I realized how essential it was for me to respond to the searing light and vibrant hues of Mexico in color. Additionally, La Calle’s brightly colored text inserts - by noted Mexican writers describing particular streets in the county - echo these hues.
