Petrified Forest National Park, the next stop on this epic road trip, was a complete surprise. We found ourselves blown away by the two hundred million year old petrified wood, the Painted Desert in the north, and this place: Blue Mesa. My first glimpses of the badlands of Blue Mesa were mesmerizing. The blue, grey, purple, and tan banding of the different deposits, eroded to form such interesting formations, seemed surreal. I visited them several times and noticed that they turn different colors throughout the day, depending on the light conditions. My favorite time to photograph them was just after the sun set during blue hour which, not surprisingly, enhanced the deep blues and purples. Dr Seuss would have been proud
