Photo: @rezaphotography // Prophecy // #India // Standing alone and upright, Prime Minister Indira Gandhi seemed to be in front of a firing squad composed of Sikhs. The men were her personal bodyguards. A prophetic image? The time had not yet come, however, for her tragic end. Instead, on that March day, the leader of the Indian subcontinent was about to welcome the heads of state who had come to take part in a summit of nonaligned countries. Yet, a year later, it was Sikhs who killed her. Gandhi was felled by the bullets of two of her Sikh bodyguards. They carried out her assassination because of her government’s repression against Sikh separatists. Photojournalists often develop a sixth sense about danger, sometimes knowing that they are in trouble without necessarily being conscious of it. The unique situations we face sharpen this sense, which is ineffable, deep-seated, and purely intuitive. It helps us avoid danger when we flirt with death. And it is also this intuition that sometimes helps us capture images that later, in the light of subsequent events, come to take on their full significance. Text written by Rachel Deghati.
