?Panama is home to 214 known species of amphibians, including the country’s national animal, the striking Panamanian golden frog. When amphibians started to disappear across Central America, Australia and the western United States, scientists at the @スミソニアン国立動物園, worked with researchers at the University of Maine to crack the case, describing a new amphibian chytrid fungus that causes the deadly amphibian skin disease chytridiomycosis. The spread of this disease has likely caused the extinction of more than 70 species of colorful harlequin frogs—like the Panamanian golden frog—in Central and South America.
