“I’d like to think that in my work two decisive moments are at play: the moment of the exposure and the moment of the book release. Timing is of the essence but a serious amount of good luck and a decent quality crystal ball are necessary.
This image was published in my Homo Sovieticus book after I visited the USSR 13 times in 1988-89. At the day of the opening and book presentation on November 9, 1989 in Amsterdam a guy with a loud radio interrupted the speech and shouted ‘The Berlin Wall is going down!’—an absolute bullseye in terms of timing. Only nobody was interested in the very last book made about the USSR, everybody was headed for Berlin.
A similar thing happened when my Cuba book Cuba, La Lucha was presented a few days before the historical visit of the president of the USA to Havana. Some of these decisive moments can be predicted or hoped for, but need more than an endless practice in capturing a fleeting geometrical moment in a fraction of a second. A book takes two to three years to finish—it’s hard to predict how the world will look when it’s published.” — @CarlDeKeyzer
