The Magic Kingdom has arrived in China. But in Shanghai, where a $5.5 billion @Disney theme park opens on Thursday, @Disney is sharing the keys to the kingdom with the Communist Party. More than 330 million people live within 3 hours of Shanghai Disney Resort, and @Disney is bent on turning them into lifelong consumers. The partnership with the government has made it easier to make that happen — but it has also given the Chinese influence over everything from ticket prices to the types of rides. To build the park, which will ultimately be 4 times as big as @ディズニーランド, the authorities relocated residents, moved graves, closed more than 150 polluting factories and built new infrastructure, including a subway line that goes directly to the front gate. Inside, visitors will find a supersize castle and a vast central garden aimed at older visitors. Last week, @lamyikfei photographed covered statues of #MickeyMouse in Disneytown, a shopping area that doesn’t require a ticket.
