From artist @hankwillisthomas as part of his takeover of our Instagram. "Priceless, 2004. James Baldwin said "the artists struggle for their integrity must be considered a metaphor for the struggle of all human beings on the face of this terrifying globe to get to become human beings" I take it to mean that our struggle to become the best artist we can be is equivalent to becoming the best person we can be. The original photograph for this was made days after my cousin was murdered in Philadelphia 16 years ago. It was at that moment that I stopped thinking of myself as a "photographer" because realized no single photograph could summarize the complexity of feelings I had at that moment. I stared at it helplessly for years trying to make sense of all the grief I witnessed and felt, and the senselessness of the acts that led to my cousin's death. Eventually I realized that I could use advertising as a medium to express my feelings. Simply because it is a language that almost all of us understand. This is not a real MasterCard ad. Art can do things ads can't. I was able to use the power and potency of the logo to get closer to the point. Life is #priceless. Artworks change over time, even for the artist. This one still pierces me. It was created at my rawest moment. There have been over 200,000 people killed by guns in the United States since that teenager took my cousins life. It is impossible not to politicize. There are no easy and simple solutions. I believe Art is uniquely positioned to raise the questions needed in our society." #seeingthroughphotographs
