Our Star-Spangled Banner flag is over 200 years old. It was designed with 15 stars. Today, there are only 14. (If you find #15 in your attic, let us know.) There were more than 15 states back when Mary Pickersgill made the flag, so what happened?
No, Pickersgill did not make a mathematical error when she was asked to make the flag for Baltimore's Ft. McHenry in the summer of 1813. The flag's design was last approved by Congress in 1794, providing for 15 stripes and 15 stars. This was not updated until April 4, 1818, so Pickersgill sewed on 15 stars.
