“Ursuţa’s true heroine, however, is not the aggressor but the trickster—shrewd and a little sinister—who cleverly subverts her troubled or downtrodden circumstances by harnessing unorthodox tactics to gain an advantage. In her 2012 exhibition “Magical Terrorism,” marble sculptures of gypsy women embodied a larger narrative about politics, economics, and dark powers. That year, the Romanian government’s declaration that witchcraft was a legitimate—and therefore taxable—profession was an unwelcome decree for many of the country’s Roma women, who retaliated by casting spells on members of the country’s high court.
