“Ursuţa’s true heroine, however, is not the aggressor but the trickster—shrewd and a little sinister—who cleverly subverts her troubled or downtrodden circumstances by harnessing unorthodox tactics to gain an advantage. In her 2012 exhibition “Magical Terrorism,” marble sculptures of gypsy women embodied a larger narrative about politics, economics, and dark powers. That year, the Romanian government’s declaration that witchcraft was a legitimate—and therefore taxable—profession was an unwelcome decree for many of the country’s Roma women, who retaliated by casting spells on members of the country’s high court. With this news story in mind, Ursuţa conceived of "Commerce Exterieur Mondial Sentimental" (2012)—marble figures modeled after a news image of a Roma woman being deported from France.” —@abellanatalie in her #AndraUrsuta catalogue essay.
